Mr. Rukma Gohain Baruah, M.A. M.Ed.
Principal
The Lakhimpur Post Graduate Training
College, a teacher education institution was founded in the year 1976,
under Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Assam. The institution has been
imparting teacher training to pre-service and in-service teachers with
an objective of enhancing quality education of the teacher of Lakhimpur
in particular and Assam in general. The need of establishment of teacher
education institution was felt at North Lakhimpur because of ever
increasing number of high and higher secondary schools in the nooks and
corners of the District. It was a need of the hour. Earlier, teachers of
various high schools were sent on deputation by the Govt. of Assam to
study and acquire B.T. or B.Ed. degree but due to dearth of seats only
a few could avail this. To mitigate the problem it was felt that the
establishment of a Post Graduate Training College will effectively train
and educate the teachers to be a competent teacher with value oriented
education.
Since its inception, this
institution has been serving as the Teacher Education Institution not
only for the North Bank of Assam i.e. from the Morkokseleng to Darrang
District but also to the other states like Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal
Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, etc.
At present this
institution is in effort of eradicating this problem by producing
competent teachers for schools. Moreover realizing the need of competent
science teachers in secondary schools, General Science Method Subject
was introduced in the year 2000 in the college. Till today
200
nos of Science teacher-students
have obtained B. Ed. Degree with Science Method Subject.
The Govt. of Assam has
deputed in-service teachers to this institution since 1991. Till date
1450
nos. of teacher-students have qualified B. Ed. degree from this
institution.
The Affiliated University
has accorded Permanent Affiliation with an increase of intake
80 to 100.
The college has been included under section 2(f)
and 12B
of UGC Act. 1956.
With the existence of
National Council for Teacher Education, a statutory Body of Govt. of
India, New Delhi, it has become mandatory for the college to get
recognition from the Apex Body. The Lakhimpur Post Graduate Training
College was granted recognition by NCTE since 1997 with an intake of 60.
A master plan has been
prepared to fulfill the infra-structure facilities of norms and
standards of NCTE in allotted land of Govt. of Assam in Nakari
Mouza, Nalkata, North Lakhimpur, Assam.
Indira Gandhi Open
University, New Delhi has identified this institution as one of the
IGNOU Centre for conducting different programmes.
I wish let a new era start
with hard and sincere work of the energetic young and committed faculty
by enhancing quality teacher education and by promoting innovative ideas
in teaching- learning process and upgrading the educational standard in
the district as well as in the state.
Let the institution
emerge as a vibrant institution in the global world.
